Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) offers a new possibility for people living with depression, anxiety, traumatic stress, suicidal ideation or other mental health needs. Through this clinically supported process we help you connect with yourself, your feelings, and your healing potential. It isn’t a miracle cure, but for many it’s a meaningful step toward feeling well again.

What Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

KAP is an innovative mental health treatment that combines the psychedelic properties of ketamine with psychotherapy in a safe, structured clinical setting. Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, has been safely used for decades in surgical procedures. More recently it has shown efficacy at lower doses to enhance neuroplasticity, reduce mental health symptoms, and help individuals access thoughts, memories, and feelings that may be otherwise hard to reach.

In a KAP session, ketamine is administered under the supervision of licensed clinicians, typically with eyeshades and music to promote an internal journey, with psychotherapy woven in before and after to help prepare for and integrate the experience. The result? A deeper, often accelerated therapeutic process that makes an impact where traditional care has fallen short.

Who May Benefit from KAP?

KAP may offer new hope for adults (18+) who:

  • Feel emotionally stuck or chronically numb
  • Struggle with depression or suicidal ideation
  • Suffer from symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or OCD
  • Are exploring options beyond talk therapy or medications

Our approach is inclusive, trauma-informed, and affirming of all identities. We know that people seeking KAP have often been misdiagnosed, pathologized or told that they cannot be helped. We’re here for the cautiously curious, the treatment-weary, and those simply wondering if there might be something more.

What to Expect

Initial Evaluation

Your care begins with a comprehensive psychiatric and psychological evaluation. This ensures that KAP is appropriate for your needs and that you understand every step of the process before deciding to proceed.

Treatment Structure

Treatment typically includes:

  • An initial series of 8 ketamine-assisted psychotherapy treatments, twice a week for 4 weeks
  • An individualized ongoing maintenance plan, typically between 2-8 additional treatments per year following the initial series

Administration Method

We administer ketamine via intramuscular injection in a clinical setting. This method offers precise dosing, minimal physical discomfort and rapid onset without the variability of oral or nasal options or the invasive nature of IV.

Before Your Session

You’ll be asked to fast for 6 hours prior to treatment and to arrange for transportation home afterward. You may need to withhold certain medications on the day of your treatment. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know in advance.

During & After

Sessions, which last 90 minutes, take place in a private, supportive TRIP room with music, eyeshades, and the continuous presence of trained and experienced mental health professionals. After your session, you’ll remain on-site for recovery and reflection for at least 30 minutes or as long as you need. You are not able to drive home after your treatment and will need to arrange a pickup from a support person or a rideshare service.

Your Autonomy Matters

We understand that informed consent is an ongoing process and the foundation of ethical mental health care. At every stage, your input drives the content explored and the support strategies implemented in your treatment. Your full understanding and consent are important to us, which is why we collaboratively determine your treatment plan. Each treatment is an opportunity to re-evaluate your plan, how well it is working and any adjustments that could be supportive to you.

Inclusive & Trauma-Informed

At PSI, we recognize the historical and ongoing inequities within the health care system for many people who are the most in need of assistance. We strive to be a safe, welcoming space for all, including people with BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized identities. Cultural humility, consent-based and trauma-informed care are core to our work.

Clinical Trials & Future Innovations

While ketamine is currently the only legal psychedelic medicine available for therapeutic use outside of clinical trials, our team is also actively involved in trials advancing next-generation psychedelic treatments like psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, and DMT.

FAQs About KAP

Is this covered by insurance?

For some types of health insurance, you may be able to get reimbursed for the cost of your visit, though this is not guaranteed; you should check the out-of-network benefits of your insurance policy for further details. After your visit, you can request a receipt (or “superbill”), which details procedure codes, diagnosis, and fees paid. This superbill can then be submitted to your insurance provider for possible reimbursement to you.

Is this legal?

Yes! All services at our center are legal, safe, and confidential. Each service we provide is based on extensive peer-reviewed research and abides by all relevant regulations. We do not provide or endorse the use of illegal substances due to current drug policy and the ongoing negative impact on marginalized members of our community.

As with any rapidly growing industry, psychedelic medicine has a wide range of practitioners operating with a variety of licenses and methods. At our center, we prioritize ethical practices, operate from an evidence-based perspective, and work with experienced, educated psychiatric and mental health professionals.

Even if you’ve had a negative experience with psychedelics in another setting, we hope to provide a safe environment for you to find relief.

Do I need to bring a prescription?

No. We provide and administer ketamine on-site as part of your care plan.

Is this the same as recreational ketamine use?

No. This is medically supervised care with therapeutic intent and clinical oversight.

Will I be alone during my session?

Never. A trained clinician will be present throughout your session and you’ll have support before and after each treatment

Can I stop if it doesn’t feel right?

Yes. You can pause, adjust or discontinue treatment at any time.
